The New York State Zoo at Thompson Park introduces the youth of NNY to the competitive field of animal care and fosters an appreciation of our region’s wildlife through conservation education.

Zookeeper experience

2019 will be the pilot year for a new Zoo Teens program provided through a partnership with Jefferson County 4-H and the Cornell Cooperative Extension.

This program is a combination of outdoor classroom sessions and Zoo Volunteering.

  • Teens will participate 2 days per week; 1 day of class + 1 day of Volunteering for a total of 56 hours each.
  • Classes will be offered on Tues/Thurs and Volunteering will be completed throughout the remaining 5 days of the week.
  • Participants will choose ahead of time which day they would like to attend class and which day they would like to Volunteer.
  • Registration is limited to 20 participants per class and 8 Volunteers per day, so sign up soon!
